CHD awareness week
It is heart month. The month of Valentines love, the month Georgia will be born and the month that we are to think more about heart disease. Of special interest in this month is the “CHD week”for all those born with congenital (present at birth) heart disease. I had no idea what 1 in 100 meant until we found out about Paul. I in 100 means that one in 100 children are born with some type of heart disease ranging from minor things you follow throughout someone’s life to major structural defects like what Paul has.
The words Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome and “half a heart” still hit me in my gut so hard.We are given one life on earth. This is the beginning of our soul’s journey. In this life, here today we have a little boy who may not look sick and may not act sick but is sick just the same. Wealso have a little boy who is THRIVING with half a heart. He is surviving HLHS everyday he wakes up to greet us with a huge smile and little arms outstretched from a crib. He is surviving HLHS with every new word he learns, every stair he climbs, every song that makes him laugh, and every toy he throws. He is surviving HLHS because of medical science, God, us and his tenacity for life. Paul is surviving a condition that was NOT survivable 30ish years ago. We have no idea what the future holds for Paul or any of us. We are all here in this one life on earth for who knows how long, so my message to you during heart month is to make every moment count.
Yes… donate to Sisters by Heart, The Todd and Karen Wanek Family Program for Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome, or the American Heart Association or any other really worthy organization that supports research for heart disease.
Yes.. get a pulse ox test for your newborn babies
Yes… keep praying for survival, thriving, and cures
Yes… know the facts and what to ask about during 20 week ultrasounds when it comes to the heart
But mostly make every moment count.
This month in honor of Paul I will…
Send more good energy to folks
Read with the BEST character voices I know how
Sing a lot
Let him run around (no matter how blue he turns)
Be proud of something everyday
Ask better questions
Wait for deeper answers
Pray with intention
Be a better wife, friend, and daughter
Be a better Mommy (times TWO!)
God is good. Thank you for loving Paul. Here’s to a happy heart month
